Fees and getting started

Is the first call really free?

Yes. The first intro call is free, and you don't need your documents gathered or your questions figured out first. That's what the call is for. If it turns out to be a fit, you get a flat fee in writing before any work starts.

How do you price your work?

You get a flat fee in writing before any work starts, with no hourly billing and no surprises. For a tax return, the quote is built from what your return actually involves, so you're not paying for complexity you don't have. Monthly bookkeeping and tax clients pay one flat monthly fee, based on what they need.

How does tax return preparation work?

It starts with a call: a few questions about your situation, with nothing to gather and nothing to send yet. You get a flat fee in writing, then you pick the week your return gets prepared, and once we're engaged your documents go through a secure client portal. Your return comes back through the portal to review and sign electronically, with a short video walking you through it.

IRS notices, audits and balances

What if I'm behind on my books or taxes?

That's the normal starting point, not a problem. However far behind you are, this is fixable. My job is to meet you where you are: get you caught up, respond to any notices or audits, and get you current on your filings.

Do I have to talk to the IRS if I'm audited?

Usually not. Once you sign a power of attorney authorizing me to act for you, the auditor deals with me, and in most audits you're never in the room. The IRS can require an interview, and if it comes to that, I prepare you properly beforehand and I'm there with you.

Do you handle state or L&I audits?

No. My audit and notice work is all federal IRS work. If a state revenue department or Labor & Industries is involved, that goes to someone who specializes in it, and I'll refer you to the right person.

What was your job at the IRS?

I was a Revenue Agent, in other words an IRS auditor, for the Internal Revenue Service for seventeen years, auditing small businesses and self-employed taxpayers. I also worked in the Special Enforcement Program, was a lead auditor by the time I left, and was Lead Instructor for Revenue Agent Basic Training, so I taught auditors how to do this work.
